Definition of Film Noir

What is film noir?
Film Noir is a type of movie made around 1944-1954 that literally translates to 'black film' in french it mainly shows crime. They emphasise women's sexual motivations as well, usually having a women that gets a man to kill someone often her husband or a lover that has wronged her. The most famous film noir movie was Stranger On The Third Floor. 

Why did this style come about?
Film Noir came around just after the World War || as they were taking advantage of the atmosphere around at that time.

What does it look like briefly?
The look of these films are very dark with their black and white scenes and their lighting being quite dark but highlighting certain parts.
