Double Indemnity vs Sin City

When it comes to looking at the differences for Double Indemnity and Sin City we can straight away say that Sin City a lot more contrasted and Double Indemnity is subtle lighting and colouring. I think that the amount of contrast in Sin City makes it a lot harder to see. Although they want certain things to be mysterious, sometimes it can be too much. Where as Double Indemnity relies on the different lighting to create the mysterious effect which I think works a lot better.

Double Indemnity:
 Sin City:

Sin City also uses colour in their film to show something that they think is sexual like underwear or lips. Where as Double Indemnity is purely black and white and relies on the way the camera angles are and props to show something that is sexual.

Also the way they show a women being sexy is very different in Double Indemnity the clothing that is seen as sexy isn't revealing like what they show in Sin City. The way they show sexy in Double Indemnity is they focus on the women's legs and the way she talks. The only part of the ladies body we see are her legs. Also the fact they smoke is seen as very sexy. In Sin City though the way they show sexy is a lot more revealing. They have a sex scene and also the women is wearing nothing but a red sheet.

Plan

Design Plan
- The location for my shoot will be in the studio.
- The lighting will be coming in from the right shining over the women's face making a shadow to hide half of her face
- Man standing to the side not seen but you can see his shadow holding a weapon
- The props I will use will be a knife, a glass of drink, a locket and a cigarette.
- The picture will be all black and white apart from her red lipstick
- The clothing of the women will be fancy. A dress for the women. A suit for the person in the shadows.
- The text I will use for this will be in this style:
It will have the title of the film which will be _____________
- Characters will be a girl and a boy from my college course. You wont see the boy as he will just be a shadow behind the girl.
- The backdrop will be black so the only light is from the lights I have set up.
- There will be a subline under the title. It will say ___________

Double Indemnity 1944

Subject Matter

The subject matter of this film is crime and confession.

Style

The style of the film Double Indemnity is very sinister. The lead women is a femme fatale, she wears sexy clothing and she also wore an ankle bracelet that was seen as seductive. She also was very dominant when it came to talking to the man as she was sly and secretive making him more interesting.  The man wears a suit and also smokes and that was seen as sexy as well.

Mood

The mood of this film is very dark and mysterious as it takes time for us to find out exactly what is happening. It is also sexual when the lady is in shot as she is trying to lure the man in and get him to do what she wants.

Technical Qualities

The technical qualities of the film started with the voice over at the start of the film. The man is speaking as a clip of a someone walking is playing. He is a silhouette so we don't see what he looks like making it more mysterious. The lighting of the film is also very mysterious as people are either hidden in shadows or when in light it is very subtle lighting.

Sin City

We watched a film noir style film called Sin City. We took notes down on the Style, Mood, Technical Qualities and Subject Matter.

Style
When I looked at the style of the film I realised that it is very comic book like. It is black and white but its so contrast that it looks as if someone has drawn it. It also emphasizes certain things for instance when we first see a lady at the beginning the whole scene is black and white but her dress and her lips are bright red. This shows she is femme fatale.

Mood
The mood of this film is very dark and bleak. It is also very violent. The first scene straight away goes into violence when the man shoots the women from behind. It then cuts to the next scene where a child has been kidnapped, and a man comes to save her and shoots a mans ear and hand off. He then shoots him in the crotch. It is very sudden and quick.

Technical Qualities
This film has many technical qualities as the way it is filmed is very different to normal films. Obviously nearly all the film is black and white so they have to balance out the lighting to give it the film noir effect. The lighting on most of the scenes are from streetlamps but there is a scene where we see a girl who is tied to a chair in a empty warehouse. The only lighting in this scene is from the light outside when a man opens the door. The way they lit this is very well done. You can see a shadow of a man at the door reflected onto the wall. The shadow is huge showing the power of him over the little girl. Also the girl is half in shadow and half in light. We can see emotion on only one side of her face.

Also when there is a scene with blood and instead of it being red its silver but then in the second part the blood is red. I think they do this for a dramatic effect as if they did all of it in silver or all of it in red people would get bored.

Subject Matter
The main subject matter in the parts of the film we saw was kidnapping and crime.
